LEADERSHIP MINUTES

September 14, 2006

NEW DEPARMENT CHAIRS

Changes in Department chairs for this school year:

Fine Arts will be shared by Kirstin Doud and Randelle Crawford

Science Department chair is Amy Hankinson

Mark Kerr will be joining the Leadership Team to as Chairperson for the 9th Grade Teams.

There was discussion about Department Chair Term Limits.  This will be discussed at a later meeting.

TEXTBOOK CHECKOUT

Some classes waited in line 30 minutes to check out books.  Students had to do this multiple times throughout the day.  Some suggestions for changes are as follows:

Ø        Have time slots set up for classes

Ø        Check out books at orientation in August.  This could be set up in the cafeteria

This will be discussed at a future meeting.

ASSEMBLIES

Colin Cushman and Bonna Giller will work with the Leadership Students about skits.  They reserve the right to stop a skit that is not appropriate.  The students will also receive instruction on use of microphone.

It was suggested that we have other types of Assemblies besides sports.  The Leadership Class will work on the “quality” of our assemblies.

GATES COACHING UPDATE

Barbara Norgaard-Reed will not be coaching at Sehome this year.   There are four new district coaches who will be rotating at the high schools.  They are Harriet Rasmussen, Holly Hansen Moore, Pam Wise, Jude Garnier.

COMPUTER LABS

The Library and the computer lab in room 110 are scheduled two weeks in advance.    The Labs are available as follows:

A-4 – Open periods 1-6

A-5 – Reserved for 9th grade Teams periods 2,3,4, & 5.   Lab is available periods 1 &6

109 are scheduled at the start of each semester.

Language Lab is also available at times.   If you have questions about scheduling labs you can talk to Debbie Franks.

BUDGET CARRYOVER

We will have the new the carry forward information by the end of October.  Enrollment should be close to our projected number so our budget will probably not be reduced for that.

There is no budget for Culminating Project this year.  The district did not get a grant this year.

Thanks for Colin for his effort in reducing expenses in the Athletic/Activities Budget.

CLASS SIZES

Head count numbers for Sehome are 1065 as of 9/11/06

Class sizes are large in early morning and late afternoon classes.

Some misconceptions for the reason:

The district is not giving more FTE to the Elementary Schools

Coaching is not affecting class size

9th grade classes are not small

We have .7 less FTE for teaching than last year.   Last year we were down 182 students.  This year we are down 41.

The Bellingham School District is growing in pockets.  The Sehome attendance area is not growing.  It was suggested that the district look at the attendance boundaries.  This will be addressed at the district level.

OPEN HOUSE

Fall Open house is scheduled for next Wednesday, September 20th.  Schedules for the evening will be sent to staff.
