Do you like money? Do you plan to work in the business world? If the answer to either of these questions is “yes,” then you should plan to take Accounting. Accounting offers an important and necessary foundation for students who plan to go on to college or enter the business world upon graduation. Students will learn the universal language of all businesses by experiencing how to set up and maintain records for a business using the double entry accounting method. Computerized accounting will also be introduced in this class. Accounting is a must for any college-bound student planning to major in business administration. Students who complete the required competencies in Accounting I or II with a “B” or better grade qualify for both high school and college credit for the class.

This course will introduce the student to basic economic theory with emphasis on free market capitalism. Major concepts include economic systems, markets, supply and demand, economic indicators, monetary and fiscal policy. Students apply their knowledge and understanding of these concepts in a competitive business simulation. Individual consumer topics of budgeting, saving, checking, credit, insurance and tax return preparation are also covered.

Introduction to Computer Applications

This course is designed to provide students the opportunity to develop and demonstrate proficiency in using word processing software, creating spreadsheets, using databases, using publishing and graphics software, using presentation software techniques, and creating web pages. Students will utilize digital cameras, scanners, and other technology tools that will be helpful as students create projects for assignments in other classes. The course will also assist students to improve keyboarding proficiency, understand technology ethics, email, the district network, and computer basics. The course will meet the graduation requirement for students who did not complete Technology Connections during their ninth grade year or assist students to perfect foundation technology skills in preparation for advanced computer or information technology courses.

This course is designed to expand students’ understanding of features of Microsoft Word 2000 and PowerPoint 2000
software. The course provides students with the essential skills to prepare for Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) certification. Course topics include how to use Word software to create documents, format text, make table and outlines, link objects, embed information in applications, and select the appropriate tool for solving a specific problem. Student will also practice basic skills for effective presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint, including creating presentations, using screen slides, editing, drawing, using clip art, animation, and WordArt, inserting tables and charts, and using templates. Computer Applications I - Word and PowerPoint Essentials is recommended for all students in the Business and Marketing Pathway, and for students preparing for careers in Information Technology. Students who complete the required competencies in Computer Applications I with a “B” or better grade qualify for both high school and college credit for the class. FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) membership is available and recommended. ($10 fee).

Students will use spreadsheet features and will create charts and tables as they gain the necessary skills to prepare for Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) certification for Excel and PowerPoint. Computer Applications II - Excel and PowerPoint Essentials is recommended for all students in the Business and Marketing Pathway, and for students preparing for careers in Information Technology. Students who complete the required competencies in Computer Applications II with a “B” or better grade qualify for both high school and college credit for the class. FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) membership is available and recommended. ($10 fee).

This course will cover the following consumer topics as they apply to individuals: budgeting (spending and saving), checking, credit (obtaining, using and evaluating), insurance, tax preparation and investing. Investing includes stock analysis and mutual fund selection with emphasis on investment strategies and portfolio construction. All topics are presented in a framework to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to manage your financial life and achieve your personal goals. A $10 fee may apply for the Stock Market Game.

Technology Connections is a required semester-long course included in the core course of study for all students in grade 9. The course provides a foundation in use of technology tools that will enable students to utilize software programs, digital cameras, and scanners as they learn effective ways of creating projects for assignments in other high school classes. Modules for the course are posted online (www.bham.wednet.edu/ techweb/tchome/) and include a performance assessment of each area. The modules are: understanding technology ethics, email and the School District network; computer basics; using word processing software; using presentation software techniques; and creating web pages. Career and educational planning is also included in the course. A “challenge” opportunity for students, who feel they can demonstrate mastery in all modules, is available each fall. Students complete performance demonstrations for each module and complete the career and educational planning module. Information about the challenge is available in the counseling office.
