MLA Documentation
Preparation for the Scholarly Paper

MLA (Modern Language Association) is the format used for documenting sources in written work at Sehome High School. This is the format most commonly used in educational institutions. In college you may be asked to use APA, or other formats, which are different in particular details, but the basic underlying principles remain the same.

One of the most important assignments that you will encounter at Sehome that requires that you use this format is the scholarly paper. This is a research paper done for your culminating project, usually completed in the second semester of your junior English class.

Why document sources?

"Ethics, copyright laws, and courtesy to readers require authors to identify the sources of direct quotations and of any facts or opinions not generally known or easily checked."--
