Lesson 3: Quality Control of the Client Web Site

Overview

Now that you have successfully constructed the client web site, you must check to be fully certain that the site is problem free before unveiling it to your client. This includes checking the site for broken links, bad HTML, browser incompatibilities, missing alt text, spelling errors, and similar issues that all fall under the heading of quality control.

Challenge

To find and correct any problems with the website that might have been overlooked during the design process.

Learner Outcomes

At the completion of this exercise, you will be able to:

• use your web authoring tool's site management features to find and correct problems in your site.
• use on-line validation tools to test your site for valid HTML, valid CSS, and accessibility.

Activities

1. Use your web authoring tool's site management features to find and correct problems in your site. Run any reports that make sense for assuring the quality of your finished product, including but not limited to the following:
   • sitewide check for broken links
   • sitewide check for accessibility
   • sitewide check for browser compatibility
   • sitewide spell check (if available).
2. Use these websites to validate your HTML, CSS, and accessibility:
   • W3C HTML validator
   • W3C CSS validator
   • Accessibility validation tools (Use one.)
     • Functional Accessibility Evaluator (FAE)
     • WAVE
     • AIS Web Accessibility Toolbar
     • Watchfire WebXACT (formerly "Bobby", the first tool of its kind)

3. Make changes to your site based on the feedback you get from the reports and tests.

All done?

Present printed copies of reports and validation tests to your instructor. Explain what changes you made based on the feedback you received.
