EDUCATION INTERNSHIPS I

Grades: 11-12

No prerequisite: Psychology of Children highly recommended. Positive attendance history required.

Transportation to the site is the responsibility of the student.

Semester: 1

Career Pathways: Human Services and Education

 

WCC Credit: This class is the high school equivalent of Whatcom Community

College courses, Coop 180 (1 college credit) and EDUC 190 (I college credit).  Tech Prep credit is available. (2 college credits)

 

Topics:

Students participate in both the high school academic learning environment and a non-paid, supervised, work-based learning internship at an elementary or middle school.  Students will learn about developmental stages of children, learning disabilities, managing student behavior and teaching methods.

 

Special Interest:

·     This class is part of a statewide Careers in Education program. Students completing the entire year (Educational Internships - Advanced is offered 2nd semester) produce a portfolio to document their skills. Many of the Schools of Education around the state give preferential treatment in admissions or course waivers for participation in this program.

·     Motivating Guest Speakers

·     Students will work 3 days a week in an elementary or middle school classroom

·     This class is for students interested in careers in human services and education, as teachers, counselors or social workers.

 

Grading: Students are graded on daily assignments, exams and their journal as well as their participation in their on-site placement.  Students will also be designing a developmentally appropriate Thematic Unit Plan including lesson plans for the age group they were working with.
