CHILD DEVELOPMENT: THEORY AND
OBSERVATION
Grades: 11-12
Prerequisite: Psychology of
Children or STARS: Basics in Child Care. Positive attendance
history required.
Transportation to the site is the responsibility of the student

WCC Credit: This class is the high school equivalent of Whatcom Community
College course, ECE 116. Students completing all of the assigned work with a grade of "B" or better will earn 5 WCC college credits through Tech Prep.
Topics:
Students will cover basic
concepts and theories of child development from birth to 6 years with emphasis
on the importance of understanding the various stages of development. Students will study the skills necessary for
effective parenting and problem situations of children, and participate in a
community-based childcare setting.
Special Interest:
· Participation
in a community-based childcare setting
· This
class is a "guided learning" option.
Students will work in the classroom, under teacher supervision. They will be working independently on the
required learning packets.
· Students
will receive a Certificate of Competency upon completion
Grading: Students are graded on:
daily assignments, class projects and exams, as well as their participation in
their on-site placement. A portfolio
will be required to earn the WCC credits.
