CHILD HEALTH, SAFETY & NUTRITION

Grades 11-12

Prerequisite:       Child Development: Theory and Practice

Career Pathways: Human Services and Education

 

WCC Credit: This class is the high school equivalent of Whatcom Community

College's ECE 218 Child Health, Safety and Nutrition.  It fulfills competency requirements for the current

Tech Prep agreement. (3 college credits)
BTC Credit: This class is the high school equivalent of Bellingham Technical College's ECH 903 Current Topics in Early Care & Education, 5 clock hours.

 

Topics:

This course emphasizes setting up and maintaining healthful environments for children. Students explore nutritional needs of children, and the caregiver's role in ensuring nutrition education. Other topics covered are setting up and managing a safe environment, indoor and outdoor safety, and emergency response procedures for childcare settings.

 

Special Interest:

·      Students may participate in a community-based child care program

·      This class is a "guided learning" option.  Students will work in the classroom, under teacher supervision.  They will be working independently on the required learning packets.

·      Students will receive a Certificate of Competency upon completion

 

Grading:  Students are graded on: daily assignments, class projects and exams.  A portfolio will be required to earn the WCC and BTC credits.
