Too often youth can feel overwhelmed and burdened by the plight of the environment surrounding us. During this program we'll provide participants with the tools to assist them in organizing, motivating, and leading other students, as well as planning service projects. We'll also examine the marine environment in order to better understand the unique aquatic ecosystem of the Pacific Northwest. Participants will be empowered as they enjoy the beautiful resources around us and gain knowledge of what they can do to help protect them! Participants in this program will: * Acquire leadership skills * Learn about the marine environment * Build relationships with other YESC students * Be challenged! * Be empowered! Although you do not need previous experience in a YMCA Earth Service Corps program, being an environmental enthusiast is a plus. We'll spend the first part of the program at Camp Orkilla on Orcas Island. The second part of the program will be spent on the seas, kayaking to different islands and camping outdoors overnight. Particpants will learn basic kayaking and camping skills, so previous experience is not required. Schedule: July 11-14: Leadership Training at Camp Orkilla July 14-18: Kayaking and Camping in the San Juan Islands July 18-21: Closure at Camp Orkilla and return home Program Fee: $675* The fee covers land and ferry transportation from Seattle, lodging, meals and all activities. *If you cannot afford the full cost please ask for a confidential scholarship application when you pre-register. Financial assistance, to the extent possible, is available to those in need. YESC will also assist participants in finding fundraising activities to help offset program fees.
